Some Things I Have Learned...

I haven't updated anything in a while so I thought that maybe I would share some a couple things I have learned so far at my job...

     1. People who work on games think about games all the time. This really shouldn't come as a surprise, but for some reason, for me, it did. I, myself don't really play games. I am not a big gamer at all. But since I've started work here, I have a knowledge about the gaming world - what's popular, games reviews, what everyone's excited about. It's crazy.

     2. I don't think I will ever remember to push AutoKey before I begin to animate. The joys of switching between Maya and 3ds Max. I always forget to click auto key before starting to animate. Even wrote myself a note. But I'm definitely getting better at 3ds Max.

     3. Video games happen in 30 frames per sec. Didn't know that until I started here. I've always done everything in 24 fps.

     4. It takes a lot to get things to work in a game. There so many people working together to get a game to look how it does. Not just the animators and environment people creating the content (what is actually seen on screen), but everyone else behind the scenes. The programmers and tech artists and whatnot. And its so easy to break things in the game.

     5. If games were realistic, no one would play them. Mostly because everything would be too slow. Some of my animations look really fast to me. Then I get edits back and they are like - make it faster.

Well, that is just a couple things I have learned so far. I'm sure there will be more to follow. I think I learn something new everyday. Which isn't a surprise since I haven't ever worked with video games or with a lot of the programs I get to use now. But that is all for now. More on a later date.

Diablo 3 Cinematic

Someone at work showed me this. Thought it was really cool so I decided to share. It is the cinematic for Diablo 3, a game from Blizzard.

Update from Texas

I've started my second week of work here in Texas. I've been having fun and learning a lot. Video game animation is pretty different that what I had been doing. I'm glad to get this opportunity to learn something new (also learning a ton of new programs). But, everyone in the studio is nice and they have been helping me get the hang of things. I'm slowly starting to catch on!

Compositing Fun

I was having a bit of fun awhile ago (I believe it was back in April or something like that) and decided to try some compositing in photoshop. Found an old picture of myself and thought it would look good with an explosion behind me. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Even painted some of my hair back in to make it look nice. Anyways, thought I would share.

Blast from My Past

video

I realized I hadn't uploaded anything in awhile so I decided to share a blast from my past. This is one of the first projects I did in my motion design class. I took that class my junior year of college. Had a lot of fun in that class. The assignment was to use one shape and a minimal amount of colors. It was done in aftereffects. I used the song Hello Seattle Remix by Owl City (gotta give credit where credit is due). I think the hardest part was the beginning. I don't know how many of those silly circles I animated.

Moving to Texas!

Soooooo.... I don't think I ever mentioned that a few months ago I had an interview with Timegate Sudtios. And for almost a month I didn't hear anything back from them so I was a little discouraged. But all is well because they have called me up and made an offer! I accepted and now I am moving to Texas!! My first studio job! I am so excited!

Danger Planet

Danger Planet from Justin Burks on Vimeo.

A friend/classmate of mine just finished a short animation. He put in a lot of hours to get it done and it turned out pretty awesome. So please check it out!

Let's Get Digital

So the other day I was bored and decided to draw myself as a Digimon character. I really loved this show growing up. Didn't get into Pokemon, but absolutely loved Digimon. Anyways, so here I am as a character, though I look much younger. But I guess since its got my hair and glasses, it makes it me. Enjoy!

Frame by Frame

Wow, this is awesome. I just found this blog on tumblr called Frame by Frame (http://framexframe.tumblr.com/). I found myself looking through this blog for a while. Love to see the frame by frame on shots that I love. I know, for me, Atlantis is one that I am always watching frame by frame. I love to see these extreme poses that you can't really see unless you are watching it frame by frame.

A Little Bored?... Maybe.

So I ended up drawing more characters from the Dirk Pitt series. I get really bored when my computer is rendering, so I draw. I drew Pitt and then decided to go ahead and draw Al and Rudi too. Rudi is supposed to have horn-rimmed glasses, but I decided to change that up a bit. I also went with a different coloring approach than before. I liked the simpler shading. It fit better I think. Anyways, here they are. Enjoy!

Maya and 3ds Max

I was taught animation in Maya and I have come to know Maya very well. Unfortunately, the animation test I need to do has to be done in 3ds Max. So I have been on a crash course to learn to animate in 3ds Max.

So far it hasn't been too difficult, but I think if I ever had to use both programs in the same day, my brain would explode. There are subtle differences that cause me to try to do one thing that works in one program, but does something completely different in another program. At one point I had a white line everywhere my mouse went... I have no idea what I did.

But it is coming along slowly but surely. I am glad that I get this opportunity to actually learn the program a little. There are still things I am trying to figure out (Tutorials are somewhat helpful). I still want to figure out parenting. I know what to do in Maya, but have yet to figure out that in 3ds Max. Plus, in general, the tools and side panels are completely different, so it has been fun trying to figure out what exactly I am looking at.

I press on!

It's a Work in Progress

Well, I thought I would share the beginnings of the illustration I am doing from the earlier drawing of Dirk Pitt. Anyways, still got some ways to go but I am enjoying it. I haven't illustrated anything in a long time. It is brushing off the cobwebs. So far I like how it is coming too.

Dirk Pitt Sketch

I just finished reading Inca Gold by Clive Cussler and I was really inspired to draw. He writes with a lot of description and it created awesome images in my head that just want to come out. Anyways, here is my interpretation of Dirk Pitt, the main character in the book. I think I am going to try to illustrate it later.

Awesome Place to Work

I have been applying to a lot of jobs and recently stumbled upon a place that I think I would love to work at: Luma Pictures. They have done some pretty awesome stuff first off. I actually found them through the credits of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (yes... I job search through watching movies... best way to do it). Besides doing awesome things, there seems to be a really fun creative atmosphere. I think if I got the job there, I would really enjoy it.

An Update

Well, I never heard back from High Moon. I guess they decided they didn't want me. I am okay with that. I am hoping that something bigger and better will come along next. I know God has plans for me. I just have to be patient. In the mean time I am still applying for every job that I can find. It is really hard sometimes to find some of those smaller studios. I am sure there are probably over a hundred studios I have never heard of. I think in the mean time I am going to get a part time job so I can save up some money, in case I eventually have to move somewhere. Well, I think that is all I have to say for now. Lydia out.

Pixar: Brave

So, just in case you haven't seen the trailer for Pixar's next big movie, I thought I would share. It looks like it is going to be pretty epic. It is called Brave and it is set in Scotland. I am super excited already. I have been looking at concept art for the movie online and I am falling in love. I like the character design for the princess. I think they did a good job making her unique and much different than the run of the mill princess (not that I didn't love Rapunzel in Tangled, but is nice to see something unique and different). Now I just have to wait a year to see it. Till then, just keep feeding me clips and artwork!

Exciting News

Things will be happening really fast if all goes well tonight. Yesterday I got an e-mail from High Moon Studios saying they would like to consider me for a temp animator position. Awesome!!! But it would start July 5th and end in January. That would give me a week to move to California. Its exciting and crazy all at the same time. I'm so nervous because I have a phone screen tonight. Pray all goes well for me!! I will update as soon as I can!

Rendering in Progress

I am super excited to get to see "Rock in the Road" (one of the projects I worked on at Southern) making progress in rendering! Everyone has been working so hard and it is good to see some results. It is going to look so awesome when it is finished. I am really glad I got to be a part of it. I didn't work on this shot, but I wanted to share it anyway. It is probably still going to be a while before I see my shots rendered. Still... Looking Great!

Compositing Reel

By the way, here is some compositing stuff I have done. I really love animation, but I find compositing enjoyable as well. I used Nuke to do all the compositing and Maya to do all the rendering and 3D work.

Disappointments and Hopes

So last night I got an email saying I didn't get in to the Rhythm and Hues Animation Apprentice Program. I was just a little disappointed. Though, It wasn't much of a surprise because I hadn't heard from them in a while and it is supposed to start in like 2 weeks.

But I hope that this just means that there is something better for me coming. One door shut, is another door open. I have already applied to 13 companies and hope to apply to more in the weeks to come. If just one likes me, I will be the happiest person in the world.

Keeping my chin up for now.

"Sideshow" Animation

Here is a shot I just finished up for "Sideshow". I had a lot of fun working on it so I decided to share it. The next shot is going to be a challenge, but excited for it. I think it will be a lot of fun to do. It is the continuation of this shot with Latigo stumbling around.

Job Hunting

Trying to find a job is one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. I have been applying to a lot different places. Hopefully someone will enjoy the work I have done. I hate to just sit and wait to hear back from people. So that is my random job-hunting rant.

New Job

Hey, good news! I got a job! I will be working on weekly animated Bible lessons for the SDA Church. Each one will be 3-4 minutes long. I am really excited!

I have to start storyboard-ing the first one. Hope to upload something soon!
